14 Books to Read
for the beginner
in the Bible
February 25, 2018
Sometimes the best first step to take is a sure one. And sometimes we also need a sure hand and a sure footstep from someone who has done the route before. And this is what I would like to do for you. I want to help you navigate in the "book of books," the Bible. None other book claims such authority, being the actual word of God. And in reality, has validity for such claims. The proof is in the pudding they say, so I am going to give you good advice on the first 14 books to read in the Bible for beginners. All the books of the Bible should be read but I want you to have that which is most important to "new" readers and I will put it in a logical order for you to follow. The last two can be put into your schedule as time allows.
#1. The Gospel according to John. This is the fourth book found in the New Testament. The purpose of this gospel is clearing spelled in John 20:31 "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." If you want to know God this is clearly one of the best choices for step one. John writes with clarity and simple straight forward simplicity.
#2 - Genesis. It is always a good place to start at the beginning and thus the meaning of the title "Genesis" Much more can be said about the book but it really is the foundation for the book as a whole. "Taste and see that the Lord is good"
#3 Exodus - It is hard to stop with reading Genesis without moving into the second book. Exodus.
It is an exciting continuation of the story of the children of Israel and how a family, grows to a nation and the dramatic "Exodus" from Egypt by God. Moses is the man God chooses for this mission.
#4Â Matthew. Going back to the gospels again is always a good idea. Salvation is the needed ingredient for us all and the book starts out in How the Lord of Glory came down to this earth as the "baby from Bethlehem" to become the "Savior of the world"
#5Â Acts. By now the beginning reader is starting to have an understanding about How God is working with the children of Israel. But now the story is beginning to change with the New Covenant and the mystery that is found in the body of Christ, which is called the church. Once again, back to the beginnings. The beginning of the church we know today.
#6 Joshua. Back to the future! Going back again to pick up where Moses left off. Leviticus and Numbers can be some tough going but Joshua is full of action. God is leading His people into the land He promised to give to Abraham many years before.
#7 Mark. More action again with Mark. It is the gospel of the servant. Jesus is the perfect servant of Jehovah and this is He in whom is found all His delight.
#8 Romans. Some people like to read more of an expository essay than a narritive and Romans is just the book to do that. Written by Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, he writes to the Roman believers just what is the gospel of God. It is very systematic.
#9 Luke. Written by a doctor. He has more humanitarian outlook on his gospel. This is the gospel about "The Man Christ Jesus" Jesus of Nazareth was truly God, yes. But also, truly human.
#10 Judges. One more time, let's go back to the beginnings of the nation of Israel. This time, once they were in the land. And time and time again we read of their failure. But God in His mercy time and time again, sends a Savior.
#11. Ruth. A small book. Well worth reading. A bit of a love story, but it helps us with the transition from the time of the Judges to the time when Israel gets their King. It is a story with a beautiful harvest scene, and a story line which should melt even the hardest of hearts as Ruth finds her Kinsman- Redeemer.
#12. Revelation. Finally, then we have reach the end. And like the book as a whole it is one continuous "revelation" about the Son of the Fathers' love our Lord Jesus. And He pulls back the curtain to give us a glimpse of how the end will come. The book promises a blessing to those who read it. (Revelation 1:3) So it would be good to tap into the benefits of reading the only book of prophesy in the New Testament.Â
#13. Jonah. Remember the story about the man that was swallowed by a whale? It happens right here in this book. And He lived to tell the tale. A short story but a true story about the mercy of God.
#14. Proverbs. We can't forget the Proverbs. Solomon noted as the wisest man that ever lived, (save the Lord Jesus) but his wise words still ring true today. It is short and to the point wise words. 31 chapters in the book, perfect for beginners to the Bible and pefect to read one for each day of the month.
